Contributing to and cultivating global talent

Since its establishment in 1907, Tohoku University has been an academic leader, producing a number of achievements under the spirit of Research First, the philosophy of Open Doors, and the policy of Practice Oriented Research and Education, and its aim of contributing to and cultivating global talent.

Undergraduate courses at Tohoku focus on cultivating students who exercise active leadership in various fields with their research based on intellectual inquiry as well as their humanistic approach to issues derived from a well-rounded education. Postgraduate courses center on the aim of developing highly skilled professionals with advanced expertise who can introduce creative insights into their world-class research.

Tohoku University has ranked first for two years in a row on the Times Higher Education annual list of top Japanese universities. The university’s commitment was highly acclaimed in the SGU mid-term evaluation in 2020 where it was rewarded with a Grade S appraisal. Utilizing its expertise as the ICL administrator, Tohoku University now puts ICL education at the core of its international education program, where, aiming to guide the ICL participating ICL universities in Japan and abroad towards the goal of internationalizing their educational systems, whilst building a strong rapport along the way.
